The number of orphans is increasing daily. Most of them are left to care for themselves and are exposed to dangers of their vagrant life. Most orphans are generally deprived of their right to education or have little access to the formal education system. And this makes a majority of them illiterates – either never been enrolled or have dropped out of the formal education system.
The lack of education and educational opportunities make orphaned children particularly vulnerable to trafficking, child labour, sexual abuse, exposure to HIV/AIDS, crime, STIs and others. These children remain one of the most overlooked and vulnerable group of children in every society with their protection and education frequently or fully neglected by their communities, government and the society at large. Visions for Nigeria is a non-governmental and non-profit making organization set to make Nigeria a kinder, gentler nation with the view to make a positive difference in communities where people are better empowered to care for one another. We believe in Nigeria. We believe that Nigeria is what we have in common – not tribe, not culture, not religion, not language, state or politics…but Nigeria.
The Visions for Nigeria “School an Orphan’ ’program with the acronym SCANO, is a project targeted at educating orphaned children ranging from ages 5-10. The aim of the project is to offer these children the opportunity not just to go to school but to help the children stay in school thereby reducing vulnerabilities.
Education is today the most effective way of helping children emerge from poverty. However, attending and staying in school is a considerable challenge for orphaned children but this educational campaign will advocate for the educational needs of children who have been orphaned across Nigeria to make their future better than today.
